Panasonic Lumix S9 Mirrorless Camera Officially Annnounced

Panasonic today officially announced the Panasonic Lumix S9, a pint-sized full-frame camera designed for content creators. This mirrorless camera features a 24.4MP full-frame sensor and is the first in the Lumix S series to sport a compact design, weighing just 14.2 oz. The S9 boasts Panasonic’s advanced Phase Hybrid autofocus system, in-body stabilization, and 6K video capabilities. It is an excellent option for those upgrading from a smartphone or downsizing from a bulkier camera, especially when paired with the new Lumix S 26mm f/8 pancake lens.

The S9’s sensor is equivalent to the one found in last year’s popular Lumix S5 II, carrying over many of its specs and recording formats. To achieve the slim body, the viewfinder was omitted, but the S9 compensates with a 1840k-dot free-angle flip-out monitor for framing and adjustments. The camera’s battery can be charged via a USB-C port and is compatible with portable power banks. A full charge allows for approximately 470 shots under standard conditions. Targeted at content creators rather than large professional crews, the S9 includes one SD card slot and no cooling fan, reflecting necessary sacrifices to maintain its compact form factor.

As the first compact full-frame sensor camera, the Lumix S9 is the smallest and lightest full-frame mirrorless camera in Panasonic’s lineup, weighing just 403g (14.2oz) and measuring 126 x 73.9 x 46.7mm (4.96 x 2.9 x 1.83 in). It features a 24.2MP full-frame CMOS image sensor, the same highly regarded sensor found in the Lumix S5 II.

The sensor is paired with Panasonic’s phase detection autofocus, offering improved focusing speed and subject recognition for human faces, eyes, animals, birds, cars, and motorbikes. The camera also benefits from Panasonic’s 5-axis in-body image stabilization, providing 5.0 stops of correction, or up to 6.5 stops with compatible lenses using Dual IS 2, significantly reducing blurring from camera shake even when shooting handheld.

While smartphones are advancing in photo and video capabilities, the uniquely small full-frame system of the S9 offers significantly more power without the bulk of typical mirrorless or DSLR cameras. The 24.2MP full-frame sensor ensures high-quality images, even in low light conditions, and the camera is compatible with numerous L-mount lenses to suit various needs. Overall, the simplicity and convenience of the S9 make it an excellent tool for quickly creating and sharing impactful images.
