Weighing a mere 2 oz (58g) and measuring just 18mm (0.71″) in depth, the Lumix S 26mm f/8 is a true “pancake” lens. It offers an 80-degree field of view and fixed f/8 aperture, allowing photographers to concentrate on composition while ensuring high-resolution output. Its compact, flat design and light weight make it an excellent choice for photographers looking to travel light; it easily fits into a pocket, ready for the next adventure.

Notably, the lens lacks traditional lens caps or filters, featuring instead a protective front element designed to endure constant use on the camera. This minimalist design echoes the Olympus 15mm f/8 “body cap” lens for Micro Four Thirds systems, although the Lumix S 26mm f/8 offers a wider field and shallower depth of field, necessitating a short-throw focus ring.

Panasonic also announced an upcoming 18-40mm f/4.5-6.3 compact zoom lens for the L-mount system, promising a close focus distance of 0.15m (5.9″). This lens aims to be a cost-effective alternative to higher-priced models like the $1500 Lumix S 16-35mm f/4 and the $600 Lumix S 20-60mm f/3.5-5.6. The Lumix S 26mm f/8 lens is priced at $199 and is expected to be available bundled with the Lumix S9 camera without significantly increasing the kit’s cost.
