OM SYSTEM OM-1 Gets 87% Overall Score and Silver Award at DPReview

DPReview published the OM SYSTEM OM-1 mirrorless camera review and test results: the new OM SYSTEM OM-1 achieves an excellent 87% overall score and Silver Award from the experts at DPReview.

OM SYSTEM OM-1 Key Features:

  • 20MP Stacked BSI Live MOS MFT Sensor
  • DCI/UHD 4K 60p 10-Bit Video Recording
  • 10 fps Shooting, 120 fps with E. Shutter
  • Cross Quad Pixel Phase-Detection AF
  • 5.76m-Dot OLED Electronic Viewfinder
  • 3.0″ 1.62m-Dot Swivel Touchscreen LCD
  • 5-Axis In-Body Image Stabilization

  • IP53 Weather-Sealed & Freezeproof Design
  • Dual UHS-II SD Card Slots

What we like

  • Excellent image quality for the format, with attractive color
  • Good DR for the sensor size, giving editing flexibility
  • 50 fps shooting with full autofocus
  • Fast and responsive autofocus
  • Subject-detection AF modes work well
  • Impressive 10-bit 4K capture combined with powerful stabilization
  • Good level of customization
  • Interesting array of multi-shot modes for specific shooting scenarios
  • Can operate or charge over USB

What we don’t

  • C-AF Tracking remains disappointing
  • AF features not well integrated into interface (eg: face selection is separate from AF point selection)
  • 8-bit video is much less detailed than 10-bit (Log or HDR) options
  • Two-position lever isn’t configurable as it should be
  • No motion correction in hand-held high-resolution mode
  • Lack of included charger

Conclusion from DPReview:

The OM-1 brings speed, improved AF and more detailed video to a system that already offered great image stabilization and small and light camera/lens combinations. This makes it a powerful all-rounder with particular strengths for wildlife. That compactness comes as a trade-off for absolute image quality but a series of computational multi-shot modes can help close the gap in certain circumstances. It’s a lot of capability for the money.
