Canon EOS R3 Sensor Resolution: 45MP or 30MP?

On April 14 Canon officially announced the development of the EOS R3 full-frame mirrorless camera – a professional camera aimed at professional sports and news photographers that boasts a newly developed 35mm full-frame, back illuminated, stacked CMOS sensor and a DIGIC X image processor, 30fps continuous shooting, “next generation Dual Pixel CMOS AF” and Eye Control Function autofocus, as well as 4K video with Canon Log3 and oversampled 4K.

In addition, on June 7 Canon released more details and specifications of the EOS R3 mirrorless camera, confirming it marks a new era for sports, wildlife and news photographers. Now the biggest question is what the megapixel count of the Canon EOS R3 will be for stills shooters.

However, Canon hasn’t officially confirmed the resolution of the Canon EOS R3, and today Techradar is reporting that the Canon EOS R3 is rumored to feature a 45MP sensor, just like the Canon EOS R5.

Canon hasn’t yet officially confirmed the resolution of the Canon EOS R3, its equivalent mirrorless camera for pro sports photographers, but rumors have strongly suggested that it’ll also be a 45MP camera. We do already officially know that R3 will be able to shoot 30fps bursts and oversampled 4K video.

I have to say this is the first time I’ve heard of such a rumor. Canon Rumors previously stated that the Canon EOS R3 will be equipped with a 30.1MP sensor. So, which image sensor will finally use, 45MP or 30MP?

We know Canon is currently working their own image sensors for different resolutions: 24MP, 30MP and 45MP. Maybe Canon hasn’t decided which image sensor will use on the Canon EOS R3 and they are waiting for the professional feedback to decide on the sensor resolution. And we previously reported that the Canon EOS R3 sensor is Canon designed and manufactured.

Since Canon does not mention 8K video on the official page of EOS R3, it seems that there is a higher possibility that EOS R3 does not support 8K (such as 30MP as Canon Rumors says). So, what do you think about it?
