Canon EOS R1 Rumored to Feature Quad-Pixel AF and Global Shutter

Canon, Nikon and Sony are expected to announce new flagship mirrorless cameras sometime in 2021.

The Nikon Z9 is coming and the specs are really amazing! It is rumored to come with a 46MP sensor and it is capable of recording 8k30p video and 4k120/60/30p video as well as 20 fps burst shooring – basically a Canon EOS R5 in a professional, weather-sealed body. And Sony is working on a new $5,999 flagship full frame E-mount mirrorless camera (Sony a9 III, sitting above the current Sony a9 II) with a bigger and truly pro body, intergrated battery grip, larger battery, and 8K video recording with no overheating.

Canon is also developing the flagship RF mount mirrorless version of the EOS-1D X Mark III, the Canon EOS R1, which will be aimed at professional sports and wildlife photographers. The official announcement will be ahead of the Tokyo Olympics this summer (July 23 to August 8, 2021).

Speaking of the specifications, the Canon EOS R1 is rumored to have Quad Pixel AF and a global shutter. Dual Pixel AF technology would improve autofocus accuracy no matter what orientation the subject or the camera is in, while a global shutter sensor would effectively remove rolling shutter when shooting video or stills in the electronic shutter mode.

Currently, we don’t have any information about the resolution of the sensor or 8K support. If we want the direct sensor readout 8K RAW, then it’s going to have to be at least the same resolution as the Canon EOS R5.

Canon EOS R5 Rumored Specifications:

  • Newly designed global shutter full-frame image sensor (21 million pixels? 120dB ultra-high dynamic range?)
  • A Quad-Pixel CMOS AF autofocus system more powerful than Canon EOS R5 and Canon R6
  • Global shutter
  • New record of high-speed continuous shooting speed

So, the Canon EOS R1 doesn’t seem to be just a mirrorless version of the EOS-1D X Mark III, and it’s a good sign for consumers that Canon continues to push the boundaries.
