New Sony Patent: A Two-Layer Sensor

Sony patented a new two-layer sensor. The first layer is color sensor – classic RGB pixel layer on top, and the second layer is monochrome sensor – phase detection pixel layer below. This means the phase detection will cover the full sensor area.

But, it’s just a patent. It doesn’t mean it will run into a real product, because it’s not even necessary to have a prototype to take out a patent.

Let’s wait and see what will happen in the future.
